Sapphire Kite Diamond Engagement Ring

THE GOAL

This one started with a couple who already had their center stone, which always makes a project feel especially personal right away. The sapphire had family meaning behind it, and the goal was to build a ring around it that felt distinctive, thoughtful, and easy to wear - something that honored the stone without making the whole piece feel too precious or too formal.

They came in with a strong direction from the start: yellow gold, a three-stone layout, kite-shaped side diamonds, a slightly wider band, and a setting that would still allow a wedding band to sit flush. What I liked about this one was that they were very clear about what mattered to them, but also really open to working through the details together.

THE DESIGN STORY

Designing around an existing stone is always a little different, because the stone is already bringing its own story and personality to the table. Once I had the sapphire measurements and photos, the design became very much about proportion - how to get enough light into the center stone, how much presence the side diamonds should have, how the taper should meet the sapphire, and how to make the whole ring feel balanced instead of busy.

We went through a bunch of CAD rounds and looked closely at how small changes affected everything else. They wanted the kite diamonds to feel a little more prominent, but we were also paying attention to how much metal surrounded them, how open the setting felt, and how the ring would leave room for a wedding band to sit flush. That part really shaped the final design. It was less about one giant decision and more about a lot of thoughtful little refinements.

The diamond sourcing was a big part of the process too. We compared different kite sizes and options, talked through lab-created versus natural, and eventually brought diamonds in to view alongside the sapphire in person. Once the proportions of the larger lab-created pair came together with the center stone, the whole ring really started to click.

DESIGN NOTE

One of my favorite things about this ring is how much of the final feeling comes down to proportion. The sapphire already carried meaning, so the design needed to support that without becoming too delicate or too heavy. The kite diamonds give the ring structure and edge, while the open setting and taper keep the center stone full of light. It’s one of those rings where the balance is doing a lot of the work.

This one had such a good mix of sentiment, structure, and really thoughtful design decisions - the kind of project where the starting point already meant something, and the design had to rise to meet it.

THE FINISHED PIECE

The finished ring feels elegant, distinctive, and really full of life. The sapphire already had so much meaning behind it, and the final design lets that stay a big part of the piece while still giving the ring its own strong point of view. The kite diamonds bring in structure and edge, and the gold keeps everything feeling warm and easy.

What I love most about this ring is how thoughtfully it all came together. The final design really does place more emphasis on the sapphire and diamonds, but without losing the taper, the openness, or the wearability that mattered from the start. And hearing afterward that she loved the ring made the whole thing feel even sweeter.
