THE STARTING POINT

Every custom project starts somewhere a little differently.

For this couple, it started with a sapphire that already carried years of family history. Her mom had purchased it in Thailand decades earlier, and several family members now wear jewelry made from stones bought on that same trip. I loved the idea that this ring would become part of that story while still feeling completely her own.

From our first conversation, they already had a strong sense of direction. They wanted yellow gold, a three-stone design, a slightly wider band, and, if possible, kite-shaped side diamonds. My role wasn't to invent the ring from scratch - it was to take those ideas and refine them into something that felt balanced, thoughtful, and unmistakably personal.

The biggest design question became proportion. The sapphire needed to remain the focal point while the kite diamonds added structure and personality. The band had to feel substantial without overpowering the stones, and the setting needed to leave room for a wedding band to sit flush. Those are the kinds of small decisions that quietly shape how a ring feels every time you look at it.

Thank you so much for taking us through the whole process of making the ring. It was really wonderful!

DESIGN NOTE

One of my favorite details is something most people probably wouldn't notice right away. The kite diamonds have enough presence to give the ring its character, but the sapphire still feels like the widest and most important part of the composition. The open setting lets more light into the center stone, while the soft curve of the band keeps everything feeling graceful instead of rigid.

Those tiny adjustments are often what separate a ring that looks beautiful from one that simply feels right.

THINKING ABOUT A CUSTOM PIECE?

Some clients come to me with a family stone.

Some have pages of inspiration.

Some simply know how they want their ring to feel.

However you're starting, we'll figure it out together.
